Two Austrian card games in one: Bauernschnapsen for four (you and your partner against two opponents) and Schnapsen for two, with the William Tell (Doppeldeutsch) deck, against the computer or with friends. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV (on the App Store as Bauernschnapsen Online) and in your browser.
How to play
The full rules are in the game: tap Rules on the start screen, or open the menu during a match and tap Rules. On a Mac they are also in the Game menu.
Bauernschnapsen, in short: two teams of two, 20 cards, five each. Forehand calls trump after seeing three cards, then anyone may announce a higher game, such as a Bettler or a Gangl. You must follow suit and beat the trick if you can; with none of the suit led, you must trump, and overtrump if you can. In a normal game your team plays for 66 card points, and the first team to 24 game points wins the Bummerl.
Schnapsen, in short: two players, five cards each and the talon. Race to 66 card points; exchange the trump Unter, close the talon, announce marriages. The first to 7 points wins the Bummerl.
In the app, your player names, settings and finished matches follow you between your iPhone, iPad and Mac through your own iCloud, when each is signed in to the same iCloud account. A match in progress stays on the device you started it on. The website, and a copy of it added to the Home Screen, keep their own saves in that browser and do not sync.
How do I change the language?
The game speaks English and Austrian German.
iPhone and iPad: the app follows your device's languages (Settings, General, Language & Region) and uses German or English, whichever is higher in your list. To change only this app, open Settings, find Bauernschnapsen (under Apps in recent versions of iOS) and choose Language. That option appears once your device has more than one language in its list.
Mac: the app follows your Mac's language. To change only this app, open System Settings, General, Language & Region, and add Bauernschnapsen under Applications.
Website: open the menu and choose English or Deutsch in the Language row. The start screen has the same switch.
How do I turn off the sounds, the voices or the music?
Open the menu during a match. Sound turns the card and table sounds on or off, Voices the computer players' calls, and in the app Music the background music. On a Mac they are also in the Game menu, and on the Apple TV in Settings. On iPhone and iPad, silent mode silences the app too. The computer players call out in Austrian German whichever language you choose, as they would at a real table.
Can I play online with friends?
Yes, both games, from anywhere. Tap Play with friends on the start screen, then start a game: you get a five-letter code to share. Friends join with the code in the app (Play with friends, Join a game) or in any web browser at bauernschnapsen.online/play, so the app and the website play together at the same table. The computer takes any seat that is left. In the app you can also invite friends to Bauernschnapsen through Game Center. Playing against the computer needs no internet connection.
Keep the game open while you play. Anyone who leaves is replaced by the computer, and if the host leaves, the game ends for everyone.
How do I play on the Apple TV?
Open Bauernschnapsen on the Apple TV and choose Play now, then a game. Play on your own is you and the Siri Remote against the computer. Play with friends makes the TV the table for the room: everyone holds their cards on their own phone. With the app on the same Wi-Fi, choose Play with friends, Join a game, and pick the TV from the list; anywhere else, or without the app, scan the QR code on the TV or type its code at bauernschnapsen.online/play.
My table plays a rule differently.
Bauernschnapsen changes a little from village to village. The rules in the game come from real Austrian tables, and corrections are welcome: write to me.

รffne wรคhrend eines Bummerls das Menรผ.
